1Password launches a way for AI agents to sign in without seeing passwords

Users keep control by approving each sign-in on their own device, and agents get access only for the task at hand.

1Password has launched 1Password for Agents, a feature that lets AI agents sign into a user's accounts without ever seeing the underlying passwords. When an agent reaches a login form, it identifies itself with a unique digital key, and the app notifies the user which credentials are needed and why. The user approves the request on their own device, and 1Password fills in the login details directly, much like two-factor authentication, so the agent receives access only for the task at hand. The company says it works with agents including Meta Muse, ChatGPT Work, Claude Duet, and Grok Bot, with more integrations from partners such as Perplexity and Ramp on the way.

Why it matters

For people who use AI agents to act on their accounts, the main change is that an agent no longer needs to hold the password itself. Each login must be approved by the user, and the access lasts only as long as the task. This limits how much an agent can do beyond what the user has agreed to, a point the company's CEO stressed when describing the design. Support is also expanding to more agents and partners, so the approach may reach more of the services people use.
