AI agents are using far more tokens than people, and the gap is widening
Most of that agent traffic is cached prompt activity, which shifts the pressure from billing to memory capacity.
OpenRouter usage data shared by Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman and an Andreessen Horowitz chart suggests AI agents now consume far more tokens than people, with agents at 7.3 trillion versus humans at 1.4 trillion in August. The gap matters because more than 85% of agent tokens are cached prompts, so the traffic is much heavier on memory than the bill implies. OpenRouter says it classifies API keys with a 7-signal score, and its chart shows agent token use up 14x since February while human usage rose 2.8x. The report also says mixed traffic grew 4.7x, McKinsey found 40% of large organizations were scaling AI agents, and memory demand is becoming a bottleneck as KV cache usage pushes against GPU HBM capacity.
Why it matters
For companies using AI agents, the issue is not only how much they spend on tokens. The larger problem is that agent workloads are creating much heavier memory demand than raw token counts suggest, which can become a constraint as adoption spreads across large organizations.
