Apple adds selfie-based age checks to iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2
Adults in supported regions can now confirm their age without a card or government ID, and once verified they are not asked again.
Apple's iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 now offer a face-based check that lets users in certain regions confirm they are adults, without needing a credit card or government ID. The system estimates age from a selfie taken while the user turns their head to show four angles. Apple says the analysis runs partly on the device and partly through Private Cloud Compute, with the images kept out of reach of the company and others, and the selfie is erased once verification succeeds. Availability depends on location, and prompts can appear when creating an Apple Account, installing an update, opening 18+ apps, or changing safety settings. Once someone has been verified, Apple says they will not be asked again. The release arrived on October 26.
Why it matters
For iPhone and iPad users in supported regions, the change offers an alternative to card or ID checks for proving adult status. The selfie is processed with the images kept out of Apple's reach and deleted after success, and a verified adult will not be prompted again. Because availability depends on location, the practical effect will differ by region, and the check now appears at several points in everyday use, from account setup to opening 18+ apps.
