AWS adds enhanced custom event buses to EventBridge
The new buses change how EventBridge is priced and packaged, while leaving existing custom event buses in place.
AWS has launched enhanced custom event buses for Amazon EventBridge, a redesign aimed at reducing the cross-account routing and subscription sprawl that many multi-account teams have built around the older model. The new bus adds ordered delivery, event replay, content-based deduplication, JSONata-based transformation, and support for Avro and Protobuf payloads, while a new Subscriber resource bundles filtering, targets, retries, and dead-letter handling. AWS says the launch is the biggest EventBridge update since the service debuted in July 2019, and the feature is built as a new resource rather than a change to existing custom event buses. Pricing also changes to an ingress/egress throughput model, with publishers billed for ingested events and subscribers billed for delivered events.
Why it matters
For teams that already use EventBridge across multiple accounts, the new model replaces a mix of separate routing and subscription pieces with a single bus and Subscriber resource. It also adds replay, ordering, deduplication and richer payload handling, so event pipelines can be managed with fewer moving parts and clearer delivery rules. Because the new capability is a separate resource, existing buses do not change, and the new ingress and egress pricing model sets a different cost structure for future use.
