ChatGPT Chrome extension can now use your open tabs

OpenAI’s update lets ChatGPT work from the page you are on and act on tabs without making you switch windows.

OpenAI has upgraded the ChatGPT Chrome extension so it can read the tabs you already have open and use that context when you tag Chrome from the web or desktop app. The update also brings a sidebar mode that keeps ChatGPT available alongside the page you are viewing, with access to your conversation history in Chat and Work. OpenAI says ChatGPT Work can also control Chrome tabs for actions such as sending messages, filling out forms, downloading files, and grouping tabs. For developers and product teams, the change shows OpenAI pushing ChatGPT deeper into browser workflows without requiring users to switch windows.

Why it matters

The change makes ChatGPT more present inside the browser, so people using Chrome can bring in what they already have open instead of copying it across. That matters because the assistant can now sit alongside the page, use chat history, and in Work carry out tab-based tasks such as messages, forms and downloads from the same workflow.
