Cody Wilson says he built the first AI-made gun

Wilson says his WASP pistol was designed with a custom model trained on gun files, raising fears that AI could make untraceable weapons easier to create.

Cody Wilson says he has built what he calls the first AI-made gun, the WASP, by using a custom firearm-focused model named GatGPT to generate designs for 3D printing. The Verge watched him test it outside Defense Distributed’s headquarters in Austin, where the .22 caliber printed pistol misfired once, then fired two live rounds, though one shot missed the target. Wilson frames the project as an AI that can generate guns rather than a gun made by AI, and says the model was trained on DEFCAD’s gun-file library. The episode matters because it shows how AI tools could further lower the skill needed to design and print untraceable weapons, which critics already worry will widen access to ghost guns.

Why it matters

The project points to a new way to produce printable guns with less manual design work. That matters because it could make it easier for more people to create weapons that are harder to trace, which is the concern critics already raise about ghost guns.
