Drone strike hits Russian finance ministry data center holding tax databases
The damage could disrupt state information systems, as Ukraine continues to target Russian data centers after earlier Russian strikes on Ukrainian ones.
Drones struck a government data center in the Gorodets suburbs, roughly 230 miles east of the Kremlin, which is operated by Russia's Ministry of Finance and reportedly stores several state registries, including the Federal Taxation Service's tax database. Citing Data Center Dynamics, the report says the site is one of two key processing centers of the tax service working in a geo-distributed setup, so the damage could affect the functioning of Russian state information systems. The finance ministry also runs two other facilities, one in Dubna and one in Yerzovka, and the loss of one of three sites could significantly disrupt the government services it provides. The attack is part of a wider pattern since early October, when Ukraine began targeting Russian data centers after Moscow struck Ukrainian ones, a sign of how digital infrastructure has become a military target.
Why it matters
The Gorodets site is one of two key processing centers for the Federal Tax Service, so its loss puts pressure on a system that normally runs across two locations. Because the facility also holds other state registries, the strike shows how government records and services can become military targets. Since early October, the pattern of attacks on data centers on both sides suggests that digital infrastructure is now a regular part of the conflict.
