GitLab 19.4 adds goal-driven Duo CLI agents and new AI spend controls
The update gives teams a longer-running agent workflow while adding tighter controls for AI usage and billing.
GitLab 19.4 expands Duo’s agentic features with a public-beta /goal mode in Duo CLI, broader MCP tool access, three hosted open-weight models, and new controls for tracking and limiting AI spend. The /goal command lets an agent keep iterating toward an open-ended objective while another model checks whether the work matches the stated goal, but it still runs under the project’s existing permissions and approvals. GitLab also added Kimi K3, MiniMax M3 and GLM 5.3 to Duo Agent Platform, plus per-user caps, overrides and more detailed credit-export rows so owners and billing managers can monitor usage more closely. The release landed on 17 September 2026, and /goal requires Premium or Ultimate on GitLab.com, GitLab Self-Managed or GitLab Dedicated, with GitLab 19.3 and Duo CLI 9.17.0 or later.
Why it matters
For teams using GitLab’s AI tools, the release makes agents more capable without moving outside the project’s existing permissions and controls. It also gives owners and billing managers more ways to track and limit spend, while widening model choice and tool access for work inside Duo Agent Platform.
