Google adds Guided Vision accessibility to Gemini Live on Android

The real-time visual assistance feature brings spoken scene descriptions and cues to more blind and low-vision users on supported Android phones.

Google has rolled out Guided Vision in Gemini Live to compatible Android 9+ devices, adding real-time, voice-based visual assistance aimed primarily at blind and low-vision users. The feature lets users share their camera inside a Gemini Live session to get spoken descriptions of their surroundings, guided reframing prompts, and natural-language follow-up answers. It was developed in partnership with visual-assistance provider Aira, whose specialists and more than 1,000 Trusted Testers contributed tens of thousands of hours of training, stress-testing, and safety evaluation. Guided Vision supports multiple languages and has been tested with blind and low-vision communities in countries including India, Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia, and Japan to tune descriptions and cues. Users can enable it via the Gemini app, Android Accessibility shortcuts, or TalkBack, but Google stresses it is an assistive tool only and not a replacement for medical devices or mobility aids.

Why it matters

Putting Guided Vision directly into Gemini Live on widely used Android 9+ phones makes AI-powered description and guidance available in more everyday situations for blind and low-vision people, not just where specialist tools already exist. Backed by extensive testing with Aira’s network across multiple countries and languages, it signals a push to make general-purpose AI assistants more responsive to accessibility needs rather than treating them as an afterthought.
