Google expands Gemini skills and sets a timeline to retire Gems

The new feature is meant to cut repeated prompting, and Google will move existing Gems into skills over time.

Google is rolling out Gemini skills in chat worldwide and widening access to Google Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education users in the coming weeks, giving people reusable prompt instructions that can be launched with a slash command. The feature is meant to reduce repetitive prompting and can also be created from chats, combined with other skills, and built with reference files such as text documents, PDFs, and images. Google says skills are already in Gemini Spark and will replace Gems as the customization tool for specific tasks. The company will begin removing Gems support in November for personal accounts, then in March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit customers, and in June 2027 for Workspace education customers, with automatic migration from Gems to skills.

Why it matters

For people using Gemini in chat and Workspace, the change makes repeatable tasks easier to run the same way each time, without rebuilding instructions from scratch. It also gives current Gems users a clear transition path, since Google plans to migrate them automatically before support ends on different timelines for personal and Workspace accounts.
