Meta releases an 800-billion-parameter open-weight model tuned for Apple Silicon
Meta says the model can run on Apple’s M5 Ultra Mac Studio, but only with enough memory to spread it across two 512GB machines or four 256GB systems.
Meta has released Muse Spark Open, an 800-billion-parameter open-weight model tuned for Apple Silicon, and the company says it is its strongest U.S. open-weight release so far. The model is built to run locally on Apple’s M5 Ultra Mac Studio, but Meta says that doing so needs about 1TB of unified memory, which means two 512GB machines or four 256GB systems. Meta also says its benchmark results show the model ahead of GLM 5.3 and Kimi K3 on agentic and visual-reasoning work. Apple has not yet set a price or shipping date for the 512GB Mac Studio, only saying it will arrive in late October, and the model is now available from Hugging Face.
Why it matters
For Apple Silicon users, the release turns a large model into something aimed at local hardware rather than only remote infrastructure. In practice, though, the memory requirement sets a very high bar: most people will not be able to run it on a single Mac Studio, and even the 512GB version still has no price or ship date beyond late October. That makes the model notable more as a statement about what Apple hardware can host than as something broadly available today.
