Mistral Releases Open-Weight Model Large 4 With Cybersecurity Focus
Organisations that run the weights themselves keep access even if a hosted provider restricts or cuts it off.

Mistral has put the weights of Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, on Hugging Face and its API, letting companies and governments run the trillion-parameter model on their own infrastructure. The company says the final version leads open-weight models for automated coding and cybersecurity, citing an 82% score on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index's reproduce-and-patch test. Its pitch is that defenders need capable models they control, since closed providers can filter security work or cut off access mid-incident. Critics note the same openness lets threat actors modify the model, and Sophos's threat intelligence lead argues that monitoring matters more than where a model was built. Mistral also claims it uses 47 percent fewer tokens per task than the Chinese open-weight model GLM-5.3, which it says performs comparably.
Why it matters
The release gives defenders a frontier-scale model they can run and control themselves, so access to security capability no longer depends on a closed provider's filtering or uptime decisions. The same openness also means threat actors can modify the model, so the weight of the change depends on how well organisations monitor how these models are used, a point critics stress over where the model was built.
