Musk accuses Ukraine of breaching Starlink terms over lethal drone strikes
The dispute puts Starlink's speed restrictions and Ukraine's access to the military Starshield service in direct conflict.
Elon Musk has claimed that Ukraine breached Starlink's terms of service by using the satellite service to carry out lethal drone attacks. His remarks followed a SpaceX restriction that bars Ukrainian forces from running Starlink on drones travelling above a set speed. Two Ukrainian officials, one serving and one former, rejected the allegation and argued that earlier SpaceX limits already stopped their military from using the service in the manner Musk described. Kyiv has also accused Musk of throttling access to Starshield, the military version of Starlink that Ukraine obtains under an arrangement with the US government.
Why it matters
The row shows how much battlefield communications now depend on a single commercial operator's terms and restrictions. Ukraine's military use of Starlink can be limited by decisions made by a private company, and Kyiv says its access to Starshield has been throttled. Both sides' accounts are being disputed, so the facts about what each side can actually do remain contested.
