OpenAI nears $30 billion funding round at $1.25 trillion valuation
The round, if completed, would make OpenAI the most valuable private company on record and raise the bar for its planned IPO.
OpenAI is reportedly nearing a private funding round of up to $30 billion, valued at $1.25 trillion before the new money comes in, and led by Coatue along with UAE investors. Bloomberg had earlier put the figure at $1.4 trillion, and terms are still under negotiation, so the numbers could move. CNBC says the UAE portion may be tied to additional computing capacity for OpenAI in that country. If completed, the round would make OpenAI the most valuable private company on record and set a higher bar for its planned IPO, which it filed for confidentially in June after a March raise that valued it at $852 billion post-money. The same valuation levels could shape Anthropic's listing, where reports point to a target of $1.5 to $2 trillion following its $965 billion round in May.
Why it matters
For investors and the wider market, the round sets a reference point for how much the leading AI labs are worth before going public. Because the numbers are still under negotiation and an earlier report put the valuation higher, the final terms could shift. The valuations also form the baseline for Anthropic's expected listing, so the outcome of this round may shape how public investors price the sector.
