OpenAI to merge ChatGPT's Work tab into Chat and pool usage limits with Codex
Users will be able to move from casual chat to multi-step tasks without switching modes, starting with a small test group.
OpenAI plans to fold the Work tab into the regular Chat experience in ChatGPT, letting users go from a casual conversation to a multi-step task without changing modes. A combined version will first reach a small set of users for feedback in the coming weeks before a wider rollout. Codex stays a separate section of the ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI is also pooling usage between ChatGPT and Codex so both draw from one allowance, while Unlimited Instant stays outside that cap. Heavier models and complex tasks will use up more of the allowance, and users can check remaining usage and reset times under Settings > Usage. Separately, the Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 plans received doubled Work and Codex allowances effective October 29.
Why it matters
For people who use ChatGPT for both quick questions and longer tasks, the change removes the need to pick a mode first. Pooling ChatGPT and Codex under one allowance means heavier work draws from a single limit, and Unlimited Instant sits outside that cap. Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 subscribers get doubled Work and Codex allowances from October 29, which matters most to those already using the heaviest features. The combined experience is still in limited testing, so the wider effect on how people use ChatGPT is not yet settled.
