Oracle triggers force majeure on key New Mexico Stargate data center

The move preserves Oracle’s ability to delay payments if its flagship AI campus slips past its 2028 target start date.

Oracle has invoked a force majeure clause on Project Jupiter, its massive Stargate AI data center campus in New Mexico, to preserve the option of delaying payments if the site misses its planned 2028 go-live date. The notice went to a Blue Owl Capital unit that is developing the campus, but both Oracle and Blue Owl say their financial and build-out commitments to the multi‑year project remain in place. Project Jupiter is designed for 2.45 GW of capacity and depends on Bloom Energy gas‑powered fuel cells, making timely completion of supporting energy infrastructure critical. A key Energy Transfer gas pipeline needed for the site has already been pushed back by roughly six months to February 1, 2027 after repeated permitting denials and a route change, and the fuel cell system still lacks an air‑quality permit. The project, part of the Stargate AI infrastructure effort by Oracle, OpenAI and SoftBank, has become a contentious local political issue, drawing environmental opposition and prompting Oracle to launch an outreach campaign in New Mexico.
