Peak XV lifts Surge seed cap to $5M and backs more global-first startups

The bigger checks and global focus signal how Peak XV wants Surge to compete for experienced founders at seed.

Peak XV Partners has raised the maximum check size for its Surge seed program from $3 million to $5 million as it launches Surge 12, a new cohort of 18 startups. The firm deployed over $50 million into this batch, which has collectively secured more than $90 million in seed funding, and says its median investment per company has climbed, though it is not disclosing the exact figure. Surge 12 is geographically spread from San Francisco to Sydney, with more than half the startups based in India but only five primarily targeting the Indian market and the remaining 13 focused on global customers. Since Surge’s launch in 2019, Peak XV has backed over 180 startups founded by entrepreneurs from more than 18 nationalities, and reports that the ten largest now generate over $1 billion in combined annual revenue. Managing director Rajan Anandan describes Surge as one of several ways the firm invests at seed alongside its standard seed deals, with cohorts typically including many repeat founders, seasoned operators and specialized technical entrepreneurs, and this group covering areas like AI, robotics, space, consumer products, healthcare, music and fintech.

Why it matters

Raising the check size gives Surge more room to lead or anchor early rounds and stay relevant for founders who might previously have gone straight to larger seed or Series A investors. The mix of global-first companies and repeat or specialist founders suggests Peak XV is using Surge to consolidate its position with more mature teams building for international markets, while pointing to a portfolio that is already delivering substantial revenue at scale.
