Ricursive Intelligence pitches AI chip design to speed custom silicon
The company says faster design could make specialized chips easier to produce as compute demand rises far beyond current capacity.
Ricursive Intelligence used TechCrunch Disrupt to argue that AI should handle much more of chip design, with founders Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini pitching software that iterates on layouts to make chips more efficient and faster to create. The company says this matters because demand for compute could jump 10,000x in the next five years, and it would be unrealistic to meet that by simply building far more data centers. Goldie said the approach could shorten chip development from months or years to about a week, which would make custom chips more practical for uses such as space, AR, VR, and biological computing. The founders also pointed to AlphaChip, their earlier system, which discovered a circular “donut-shaped” chip layout that surprised engineers but worked well.
Why it matters
If chip design can be cut from months or years to about a week, more specialized hardware could move from rare projects to something more practical. That matters because the founders say future compute demand may rise by at least 10,000x, and they argue building far more data centers alone will not cover it.
