Share of Developers Reporting 10+ Weekly Hours Saved by AI Falls to 26%
The drop comes as nearly all teams now use AI, and the survey's authors say it is perception-based and does not prove cause.
Atlassian's State of Developer Experience 2026 survey found the share of developers reporting ten or more hours saved weekly through AI fell from 68% to 26% in a year, even as nearly all teams now use AI. The report says the findings rest on self-reported perception rather than system metrics, and it does not claim causation. Nearly half of developers now spend four or more hours weekly managing AI tools, and 65% spend time fixing AI output that missed the intent of the work. Only 17% of developers report a clearly implemented AI strategy, and those who do are more likely to see reduced friction. The comparison is also weakened by a shift in sample size and method between the 2025 and 2026 editions.
Why it matters
The findings suggest that broad AI adoption has not automatically produced the time savings many developers expected. Much of the gained time appears to be consumed by managing tools and correcting output that misses the task. Readers should treat the decline as a signal to measure AI's effect more carefully rather than as proof that the tools have stopped helping. The weakened comparison between editions also means the size of the change is itself uncertain.
