Shopify lets browser AI agents complete checkout with new WebMCP tools
Opening checkout to WebMCP agents extends Shopify’s commerce protocol from search to completed orders.
Shopify is extending its WebMCP support from storefronts and carts to checkout, allowing browser-based AI agents to complete purchases on Shopify merchant sites with buyer authorization. The new capabilities include three tools — get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout — that let agents read checkout details, modify fields such as addresses or delivery options, and submit orders using Shop Pay. This builds on Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol, which standardizes product discovery, cart creation and checkout for both hosted MCP servers and browser-based agents. The rollout applies to all eligible Shopify merchants, and Shopify says agents should use these structured APIs instead of scraping human-oriented HTML. AI agents like Muse and Instinct already partner with Shopify for agentic commerce, with Instinct’s integration newly announced alongside this update.
Why it matters
By moving checkout into the same protocol that already covers discovery and carts, Shopify turns its AI agent support into a full purchase pipeline rather than a handoff before payment. That makes it easier for existing partners like Muse and Instinct to handle more of the buying flow directly through structured APIs, instead of brittle HTML scraping, and makes the new capability available across eligible merchants at once.
