Sony adds AI upscaling to the base PS5
QSSR lands first in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, giving standard PS5 owners new image options and opening the feature to more PlayStation games.
Sony Interactive Entertainment is rolling out AI-based upscaling, called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), to the standard PS5, starting with patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. The update adds new graphics options in those games that use QSSR to improve image detail and stability. Sony says any PlayStation developer will be able to integrate QSSR into their titles going forward. The company describes QSSR as the outcome of work with AMD, enabled by a streamlined neural network and a performance-optimized implementation. On the same day QSSR arrives in Ghost of Yōtei, Sucker Punch is releasing a complete edition with a new story expansion and roguelike mode, with existing owners able to upgrade for $15.
Why it matters
This brings Sony’s image-upscaling work to the standard PS5 instead of leaving it only on PS5 Pro, so more players can see the same kind of visual improvement in supported games. It also means developers can start using QSSR in future PlayStation titles, which could make the feature a normal part of the platform rather than a one-off update.
