SpaceX and Qualcomm team up to build a 5G network for Starlink Mobile
The deal pairs ground cell hardware with SpaceX's satellites as it pushes Starlink Mobile toward a US carrier role.
SpaceX has agreed a multi-year deal with Qualcomm to build out the cellular network for its Starlink Mobile service in the United States. Under it, Qualcomm's Dragonwing Cellular Infrastructure platform, which combines hardware and software to improve coverage, capacity and efficiency, is to be installed at tens of thousands of 5G cell sites, with first deployments scheduled for 2027. SpaceX intends to pair that equipment with its fleet of direct-to-cell satellites. The partnership is part of a drive to position Starlink Mobile as a major carrier that would compete head-on with T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. SpaceX has already acquired a large block of spectrum, and recent reports said it had explored buying Boost Mobile.
Why it matters
The partnership signals that SpaceX wants Starlink Mobile to be a full mobile carrier rather than a satellite add-on, putting it in direct competition with T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. Deployment at tens of thousands of cell sites starting in 2027 would mean a large physical rollout across the US, and combining it with the direct-to-cell satellites would tie terrestrial coverage to space-based service. Existing spectrum holdings and reported interest in buying Boost Mobile suggest the ambition goes beyond a single network build, though whether that becomes a real carrier depends on how these pieces come together.
