Ukrainian naval drone sinks Russian explosive drone boat in first USV clash
The Black Sea encounter marks the first recorded battle between uncrewed surface vessels in the war.
On September 12, a Ukrainian naval drone boat destroyed a Russian explosive drone boat in what is reported as the first recorded battle between uncrewed surface vessels. Ukrainian Defense Intelligence detected the Russian drone in the Black Sea and guided a Ukrainian Navy USV to intercept it. The Ukrainian vessel used a remote‑controlled machine‑gun turret to disable the Russian boat before it could carry out its ramming attack. The Russian craft was identified as an Orcan surface drone equipped with a jet‑ski‑style steerable water jet and designed to detonate on impact. Orcan drones have previously been used against Ukrainian ports and ships, often coordinated with Russian Geran reconnaissance drones that extend communications and targeting for these naval systems.
