Xbox Game Pass may let subscribers pick and pay for individual features

If the reported model arrives, subscribers would pay only for the parts they use, such as cloud streaming or multiplayer, rather than a fixed tier.

Microsoft is reportedly reworking Xbox Game Pass so subscribers could assemble their own plan from individual features instead of choosing a fixed tier. Current options run from Essential at $10 a month to Ultimate at $23 a month, and the flexible model reportedly would allow things like cloud streaming, console-only game add-ons and multiplayer to be bought separately. Fortune reported in October that the plan would operate on a tiered structure, and Windows Central had earlier described a version where users decide which content packages they receive. The shift could lower entry costs for newcomers, though how it would work in practice has not been confirmed.

Why it matters

The change would move Game Pass from a bundle set by Microsoft toward one shaped by each subscriber's own habits. Today the gap between Essential at $10 and Ultimate at $23 is a choice between a smaller library and a larger bundle, so a feature-by-feature plan would let people who want only cloud play or online multiplayer avoid paying for extras they do not use. It would also reflect how Microsoft has already reshaped the service: Xbox Live Gold was retired in 2023 and its online multiplayer folded into the Essential tier. Reports describe the plan as still unconfirmed in practice, so the actual price points and what each feature would cost remain open.
