Android users in parts of Canada told to update as clocks stop falling back

Devices showing the wrong time after November 1 can be fixed through updates or manual time zone settings, and the same issue could reach the US if it adopts permanent daylight saving time.

Google has published guidance for Android users in parts of Canada where clocks will no longer fall back an hour on November 1, after British Columbia and Manitoba moved to permanent daylight saving time. Devices that display the wrong time are advised to install any pending updates from the manufacturer and Google, then restart. If the problem persists, users can turn on automatic time zone detection and the location-based time zone option in the Date and Time settings. As a final step, automatic detection can be switched off and the time zone chosen by hand to match the region's offset. The episode also previews possible issues if the US adopts permanent daylight saving time nationwide, as the House has advanced the Sunshine Protection Act.

Why it matters

British Columbia and Manitoba will stay on daylight saving time year-round, so phones that do not handle the change correctly may display the wrong time from November 1. Anyone in those provinces who relies on an Android device for timekeeping is affected first. The House advancing the Sunshine Protection Act means the same kind of disruption could later spread across the US, which is why the Google guidance matters beyond Canada.
