Anthropic eases Claude's game cloning ban so original games in named genres are allowed
Requests for direct copies of existing games will get an offer to build something similar instead, while genre-based requests go ahead.
Anthropic has relaxed a rule in Claude that blocked game-cloning requests, after the restriction also caught developers asking for legitimate projects. Under version 2.1.317, Claude will build an original game in a named genre when a specific title is cited only to describe mechanics, while requests for a direct copy get an offer to build something similar instead. The change follows reports that bad actors were using AI to reverse-engineer indie game demos and extort developers, and Anthropic is trying to balance protecting creators with keeping Claude useful for building new games. Technical staff member Addy Osmani announced the update on X.
Why it matters
The change narrows a restriction that had been catching legitimate game requests, while keeping a line against direct copies of existing titles. Indie developers, whose demos were the target of extortion attempts that prompted the rule, keep that protection, and developers who only cite an existing game to explain mechanics can again get help building something new. Anthropic is weighing creator protection against Claude's usefulness for game development, and this update is its current attempt to do both.
