Anthropic sets aside more equity for public benefit through a new fund

The plan would tie more of Anthropic’s ownership to public-good uses if stockholders approve it.

Anthropic said it will set aside a bigger slice of its equity for public benefit through a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval. The company said 5% of its shares would be committed now, with another 2% added at the board’s discretion for each 50% rise in value above a baseline. Anthropic said the fund will be a wholly owned LLC so it can support a wider range of giving, including large nonprofit donations or direct payments to specific groups, while excluding lobbying and political giving. It also said roughly 20% of Anthropic shares are already or will be dedicated to the public good when this is combined with earlier founder pledges and employee donation matching, and that about half of employees take part in that program. The company said it has already committed $200 million to study and address labor market impacts from AI.

Why it matters

For shareholders, the move creates a larger and more flexible pool of equity committed to public benefit, with the amount rising if the company’s value climbs. It also puts a clear limit on how that pool can be used, ruling out lobbying and political donations while leaving room for other forms of giving. Combined with earlier pledges and matching, Anthropic says about 20% of its shares would be dedicated to the public good.
