Apple Pay launches in India with a limited bank rollout
Apple Pay is now available in India, but only for Axis Bank Visa and MasterCard credit cards at launch.
Apple has launched Apple Pay in India, but the rollout is narrow and currently limited to Visa and MasterCard credit cards issued by Axis Bank. The service still does not work with cards from other major Indian banks or with RuPay, and it requires payment terminals that have been enabled for Apple Pay. Apple says millions of merchants in India will accept it at launch, including Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Croma, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg and Zomato. The launch matters because India is the world’s largest population market, and Apple is still working through local bank terms, including a reported 0.2 percent transaction fee.
Why it matters
For people in India who use Apple Pay, the service is not broadly open yet. It works only with one bank’s Visa and MasterCard credit cards, while cards from other major banks and RuPay are still unsupported. That means the launch is real, but access depends on both the card issuer and whether the terminal has been enabled.
