Asus gets U.S. router exemption but leaves its filing path unclear

The company can now bring early Wi‑Fi 8 routers to the U.S., but it has not said whether that came from a U.S. manufacturing commitment.

Asus has received a U.S. exemption that lets it bring upcoming Wi‑Fi 8 routers into the market, but it still has not explained whether that cleared path involved a commitment to build routers in the United States. The Verge says Asus told it only that the company had submitted the required plan to the FCC and was working with manufacturing partners for future networking products in the U.S., while refusing to clarify the plan’s meaning. The FCC has given Asus a blanket exemption covering all future routers through March 2028, and Asus is now also describing itself as a certified “Trusted Networking Equipment Brand” and “Trusted Consumer Router Vendor.” The reporting notes that those titles appear to point back to Asus’s own claims rather than to a clearly public federal designation.

Why it matters

This gives Asus a clear route back into the U.S. router market through March 2028, including its next Wi‑Fi 8 models. But the company’s refusal to spell out the filing behind the exemption leaves the basis for that access unclear, even as it describes itself as a trusted vendor.
