Barclays expands Claude use across the bank to speed software and service work
Claude will reach more Barclays developers and support more internal tasks, extending its role in software delivery and employee and client operations.
Barclays is widening its use of Anthropic’s Claude across the bank to speed software work, update old systems, and improve service for customers. The rollout is set to bring Claude Code to half of Barclays’ developers by the end of 2026 and to a majority of its software engineers in 2027. Barclays already uses Claude in its Colleague Knowledge Assistant, which has been live since 2025, is used by more than 16,000 employees, and has handled over one million searches. In Global Markets, Claude also helps sort and route about 120,000 incoming emails each day to cut manual handling and speed responses. The bank says the expansion will continue under strict governance, security controls, and human oversight.
Why it matters
The expansion turns Claude from a set of targeted tools into a broader part of Barclays’ day-to-day work. For developers, that means more access to Claude Code as the bank pushes it to half of its developer population by the end of 2026 and a majority of software engineers in 2027. For employees and client-facing teams, it builds on the assistant already in use and the email-routing system in Global Markets, both aimed at reducing manual handling and speeding responses.
