Canva to cut or reshape 22 percent of staff in restructuring
Affected staff get at least six months of salary and a year of healthcare cover, while product work consolidates around Sydney.
Canva says it will cut or reshape roles affecting 1,271 people, about 22 percent of its workforce, according to a note from co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins. Perkins described the move as a refounding, arguing that smaller changes would not be enough for the company's next decade. Canva plans to merge its Product, Growth and Platform teams into a single product organization and to simplify management layers. Sydney will become the main base for many product teams, and from January most hybrid staff are expected to be in an office two to three days a week, depending on local arrangements. Departing employees will receive at least six months of salary, twelve months of healthcare cover and career support.
Why it matters
The move signals that Canva considers incremental change insufficient and is reorganising its product work into one unit with fewer management layers. For the 1,271 people affected, it means leaving with a defined severance package, and for remaining hybrid staff it brings a firmer office expectation from January. Sydney's growing role as the main base for product teams shifts where the company's core product decisions are made, which matters for anyone tracking how the company is positioned for its next phase.
