Discord Plans to Show Messages From Large Public Servers in Web Search

Answers buried in public server chats could become findable on the open web, with admins and users able to opt out.

Discord is preparing to let messages from its largest public community servers appear in web search results, a shift aimed at surfacing answers that have accumulated in chat logs instead of forums. The feature begins rolling out in mid-December and applies only to Discoverable Servers, meaning public servers with more than 1,000 members that can be joined without an invite. Server admins can exclude their server or limit searchability to chosen channels, and individual users can opt out through the Data and Privacy section of their User Settings. Only messages from adult accounts are included, and direct messages, private servers and group DMs are unaffected. Usernames and avatars will not be displayed alongside the indexed messages.

Why it matters

Public Discord conversations have been largely hidden from the wider internet, and this rollout would change that for the biggest open communities. For people who ask questions in those servers, their messages could start appearing in search results, though usernames and avatars will not be shown alongside them. Users and server admins keep control: admins can exclude a server or limit searchability to chosen channels, and individuals can opt out in their User Settings under Data and Privacy. The change matters most for the millions of answers that have accumulated in chat logs rather than on forums.
