Former US soldier sentenced to 70 months in tech-company extortion case
A restitution order adds a financial consequence for a case built on stolen company credentials and extortion demands.
Former U.S. Army soldier Cameron John Wagenius received a 70-month prison sentence for cyberattacks and extortion involving at least 10 U.S. technology and telecom companies from April 2023 to December 2024. While on active duty, he and his accomplices used SSH Brute, a tool he helped develop, to obtain network credentials; they also used Telegram to share stolen logins and coordinate operations. The group attempted to extort at least $1 million from data owners. Wagenius was also ordered to pay $294,978 in restitution. Separately, following major breaches linked to Snowflake attacks, Snowflake said it would enforce MFA and require customers to use passwords at least 14 characters long.
