Google backs upgrades at six Constellation nuclear plants
The deal adds firm clean power to the PJM grid while keeping existing plants running and supporting thousands of jobs.
Google said it is funding upgrades to six Constellation Energy nuclear plants and adding Gemini Enterprise software to help run them, a move meant to supply more reliable electricity for its data centers and the broader PJM grid. The collaboration is expected to unlock 890 megawatts of extra nuclear capacity before the end of 2032, while preserving about 4,400 jobs and creating roughly 7,200 construction jobs. Google said the agreement is part of a wider push to extend the output of existing U.S. reactors, and that its nuclear deals now amount to more than 1.5 gigawatts of added capacity. It also said Constellation will use Google Cloud’s agentic workflows to speed uprate planning, streamline construction, and improve plant output.
Why it matters
For utilities and grid operators, the point is not a new plant but more output from reactors already online. That means extra firm power can reach the PJM system without waiting for a long build, while the project also keeps thousands of jobs tied to the plants and construction work. Google says this adds to more than 1.5 GW of U.S. nuclear capacity across its deals.
