Microsoft previews a Windows 11 search bar that can run actions and talk to Copilot

The new search experience is set to arrive this fall and could turn the taskbar into a place for quick system changes and Copilot commands.

Microsoft used its Windows and Surface event to show a new Windows 11 search experience that can run quick system actions from the taskbar and talk to Copilot, with rollout planned for this fall. The company said the search bar will let people issue short commands to change settings such as dark mode, do not disturb, and microphone volume, and even send texts from a paired phone. Microsoft also previewed Copilot upgrades based on what it calls Hybrid Intelligence, which will give the assistant access to local files and the ability to act across the OS. In a demo, Jacob Andreou showed Autopilot finding tax documents, renaming them, zipping them, and drafting an email for an accountant, with those Copilot features due in the next couple of months.

Why it matters

For people using Windows 11, search is shifting from finding apps and files to triggering actions from one place. That means simpler access to common settings now, and a more capable Copilot soon that can work with local files and carry out tasks across the system. Microsoft says the search update is due this fall, while the Copilot changes are due in the next couple of months.
