Musk confirms Grok usage cuts were deliberate, citing unsustainable serving costs

Musk has not said how paying subscribers' limits will change, leaving users unsure how much capacity they will get from here.

Some users of SpaceX's Grok Bot found their weekly usage allowances suddenly exhausted over the Halloween weekend, with some reporting jumps from around 50% to full usage despite idle periods. Elon Musk confirmed on X that the drop was deliberate, attributing it to serving costs that were too high compared with the revenue the bot brings in. The episode comes as SpaceX, which recently listed publicly, says AI accounts for 52% of its income and that its renamed Super Intelligence division posted a $431 million profit even after $1.2 billion in one-time charges tied to its Cursor acquisition. Musk has not said how limits for paying subscribers will change going forward.

Why it matters

The move shows that AI services can be rationed sharply when serving costs outweigh revenue, even for a product tied to a company whose AI business now produces about half its income. For users, weekly allowances are no longer a stable promise and can be cut without notice. Because Musk has not explained what happens for paying subscribers, the practical effect is uncertainty about how much the service can be relied on for everyday work.
