Raspberry Pi raises 16GB Pi 5 price to $385 as memory costs climb

The increase follows a smaller rise on lower-memory models and puts the top-end board well above the price range the brand was known for.

Raspberry Pi has raised prices on some 16GB models, lifting the 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 by $80 to $385 with immediate effect and the 16GB Compute Module 5 by $40. Founder Eben Upton blamed the sharp rise in memory costs over the past two years and said other hardware makers had made similar moves. The 16GB Pi 500+ desktop keeps its price, though at $485 it was already expensive. This follows a earlier increase of $12.50 on the 2GB Pi 4 and Pi 5, which now cost $67.50 and $77.50, and the 1GB models have not changed. The increases hit a brand whose boards were long built around a $25 to $35 target, and makers may look to Pico or ESP32 boards for small projects and to mini PCs for heavier work.

Why it matters

The increase lands on hobbyists and developers who relied on Raspberry Pi as a low-cost computer, and it shows memory costs reaching even a brand built on cheap hardware. Buyers of the 16GB model now pay more than triple its original price, which may push some toward alternatives for lighter projects. Upton said other hardware makers have made similar moves, so the pressure may not be limited to one company.
