New Jersey deputy attorney general arrested over alleged AI child abuse images
Officials say the case shows AI-made child sexual abuse material is being handled as child abuse material in enforcement.
New Jersey prosecutors say their own deputy attorney general, Brian Richard Fitzgerald, was arrested on Thursday over allegations that he used AI to turn social media photos of real minors into sexualized images and then shared them. The Bucks County Detectives press release says the charges are felonies tied to AI-generated child sexual abuse material, and Fitzgerald is 51. The case matters because it shows AI-made CSAM is being treated as CSAM in enforcement, matching the Justice Department’s earlier guidance to police. The arrest happened at Fitzgerald’s home.
Why it matters
For law enforcement and prosecutors, the case reinforces that AI-generated sexualized images of real minors are not being treated as outside existing child abuse laws. That narrows any argument that synthetic output changes the legal character of the material, and it signals that police are already acting on that view.
