Nexus Mods will require authors to disclose AI use in new mods
Mods tagged as AI-assisted must explain how and where AI was used, and users will get controls to hide AI-generated content.
Nexus Mods, the largest PC gaming mod repository, will require authors of newly uploaded mods to state whether AI was used in creating them, according to a post by site owner Victor Folmann. Mods labelled AI-assisted must also publish an explanation of how and where AI was involved, and AI tags will appear more prominently on mod pages. The platform has opted against an outright ban on AI-generated mods, arguing that AI is woven through modern creation tools and a ban would only discourage disclosure. Nexus Mods also says it will not use mods to train AI or license them to anyone who does, and is adding controls to hide AI-generated content on game pages, the homepage and, later, search. Existing mods have 60 days to comply, with enforcement beginning January 2.
Why it matters
Players and mod users who prefer human-made work now get a clearer way to see and filter AI involvement on the largest PC gaming mod repository. Mod authors are not barred from using AI, but they must be open about it, and existing uploads have a 60-day window before enforcement starts after January 2. The policy also rules out using mods to train AI or licensing them to AI developers, which sets a boundary on how the platform's creative work can be used.
