OpenAI adds computer use and cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol at DevDay 2026
The new tools let agents work through software interfaces and give developers a lower-cost model for coding and computer tasks.
OpenAI used DevDay 2026 to push its platform further toward agentic software workflows, adding computer use to the Agents API, cloud-hosted Codex environments, a Decisions API, and broader ChatGPT plugin capabilities. For developers, the biggest practical changes are that agents can now interact with software through graphical interfaces, Codex can run remote jobs in the cloud, and a new code-review path can inspect pull requests and merge requests. OpenAI also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, a coding- and computer-use-focused model that it says comes close to GPT-6 Astra on several benchmarks while costing one-fifth as much for standard input and output tokens. On pricing, cached input for GPT-6.1 Sol is listed at $0.10 per million tokens, and the model is available through the API, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. The event also added Dots and ChatGPT Space, reinforcing OpenAI’s move from single-shot model calls toward persistent, collaborative agents.
Why it matters
These changes move OpenAI’s platform closer to software that can act inside existing tools rather than only answer prompts. That matters for developers building agents, because the API and model updates now support more hands-on workflows across interfaces, code tasks and hosted environments, while reducing the cost of using GPT-6.1 Sol. The result is a broader base for agent-style products, not just chat-based ones.
