OpenAI deploys Jalapeño ASICs on AMD EPYC Turin hosts
OpenAI is choosing a mature host platform to speed up internal rollout while avoiding extra risk.
OpenAI is deploying its Jalapeño ASIC internally on AMD EPYC Turin hosts with 1.5TB of memory, a choice that highlights how the company is prioritizing low-risk, fast hardware rollout over trying the newest platform. Richard Ho, OpenAI’s VP and Head of Hardware, said Turin was selected because it was mature enough for the job and let the team avoid unnecessary risk. He contrasted that with Nvidia’s Vera CPU, saying it is still behind on maturity for this kind of deployment. The report also notes that Turin is socketed, which makes host servicing easier than Vera’s board-mounted design, and that OpenAI may use different hosts later.
Why it matters
For OpenAI, the host choice shows it is prioritizing a dependable path to deployment over trying the newest option. That affects how quickly these ASICs can be put into service and how much operational risk the company takes on while it pursues its performance and cost targets. It also leaves room for different hosts later if the deployment needs change.
