OpenAI starts rolling out ChatGPT Dots to paid users
The always-on agents are arriving gradually, with access limited to certain paid plans and some regions.
OpenAI has started rolling out Dots, always-on ChatGPT agents that can work from their own cloud instance, and the feature matters because it is aimed at automating routine and long-running tasks for paying users. For consumers, access starts with ChatGPT Pro, which costs $100 per month, while Business Premium and eligible Enterprise workspaces can also use them where ChatGPT is sold. Dots are not yet available to Pro users in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, or the UK, and OpenAI says access may take several days to reach an eligible account. Creating one currently requires the desktop app or the website on a PC browser, and once set up it can be used from the mobile app, with support for more than 4,000 apps through plugins. OpenAI says the first Dot is included with the plan for Pro and Business Premium users, that direct chat with a Dot through ChatGPT is free, and that future text messaging to Dots will also not count against usage limits, while the Dot’s own work will count toward monthly allowances.
Why it matters
Dots add a way for paid ChatGPT users to hand off routine or long-running work to an agent that can keep going without the user present. That makes the feature relevant to people already paying for Pro, Business Premium or eligible Enterprise access, while the staggered rollout and regional limits mean availability will vary by account and location. OpenAI’s plan to include the first Dot and charge for more also shows the feature is being positioned as a metered add-on, not a universal default.
