OpenAI starts testing image-generation ads in ChatGPT

The trial gives OpenAI a new way to monetise ChatGPT without changing the answers it gives.

OpenAI is starting to test image-generation ads inside ChatGPT, a move that gives the company a new monetization path for a product it says reaches 1.2 billion people each week. The trial will begin later this month in the U.S. with a limited set of advertisers, and the ads will be labeled and kept separate from the image being created. OpenAI says the format may use pictures to highlight product ideas, product use, or service experiences, and that the ads will not affect ChatGPT’s answers. It is also adding measurement and brand-safety integrations with partners including Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp, AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava, DoubleVerify, and Integral Ad Science.

Why it matters

For ChatGPT users, the main change is that advertising may now appear inside the image-creation flow, but OpenAI says it will stay labeled and separate from the image itself. For the company, the test opens a new revenue path in a product it says now reaches 1.2 billion people each week, while the partner integrations point to a more measured ad business with conversion and brand-suitability checks.
