Perplexity launches Teammates, persistent AI agents for ongoing office work
The agents run in the background around the clock and are limited to the company's $200-a-month Max tier for now.
Perplexity has rolled out Teammates, persistent AI agents aimed at ongoing office work, positioning them against similar offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. Each Teammate can be given its own role and runs around the clock in the background, with the ability to supervise other Teammates and bring new ones in as workloads grow. They sit on top of Perplexity Computer, the company's cloud agent that handles multistep jobs, and can pull in existing projects, skills and memory from tools a user already relies on. Progress is visible in per-agent threads inside the Perplexity app and the agents can also be reached through Slack. The feature is limited to Max subscribers, who pay $200 a month or $2,000 a year, which makes it the costliest of the comparable products. CEO Aravind Srinivas has said he expects organisations to eventually run hundreds of Teammates per person.
Why it matters
The launch puts Perplexity directly against OpenAI and Anthropic in the market for AI agents that keep working on a task over time rather than answering one request. For a Max subscriber, the change is that routine work can continue in the background and surface only when a decision is needed. Perplexity's CEO expects organisations to eventually run hundreds of these agents per person, which would shift how office work is divided between people and software. Access is restricted to the top tier, so the near-term effect is limited to users willing to pay the highest price in the category.
