Russian drone strikes disrupt internet and mobile service in Ukraine
The attacks have widened beyond one site or provider, making outages more likely for households and telecom users in Kyiv.
Russian drone strikes are now hitting Ukrainian data centers and telecom networks hard enough to interrupt Internet and mobile service, raising concern that gaps in air defense could damage both daily communications and the country’s digital economy. The attacks have centered on Kyiv since September 23, and Ukraine’s digital transformation ministry said 100,000 households in the Kyiv region briefly lost Internet access after the first wave. Reporters Without Borders says the campaign has since widened against major data centers and mobile phone networks. Officials, including Volodymyr Zelenskyy, are pressing for stronger air defenses as the strikes continue.
Why it matters
For people in Kyiv and beyond, the strikes show that disruptions are no longer limited to brief local outages. Hitting multiple providers and facilities within days makes Internet and mobile service less reliable and raises the risk that everyday communications are affected again as the attacks continue.
