SpaceX reportedly seeks $40 billion debt package for Nvidia AI hardware
If completed, the financing would help pay for Nvidia Rubin systems for xAI and push the project’s close to 2027.
SpaceX is said to be lining up a $40 billion financing plan to buy Nvidia AI hardware for xAI, a move that would further expand Elon Musk’s compute buildout if it goes ahead. The reported structure mixes about $10 billion in bank loans with $30 billion of investment-grade debt, and the deal is still only being discussed. If it closes, the money is expected to fund Nvidia Rubin-generation systems, with one estimate putting the total at roughly 5,000 Vera Rubin NVL72 machines and about 360,000 Rubin accelerators. The transaction is being associated with Apollo Global Management on the arranging side, with closing currently projected for 2027, while the report says no one involved has publicly commented.
Why it matters
The deal points to a much larger pool of capital being lined up for xAI’s compute needs, with SpaceX being used as the financing vehicle. For customers, rivals and suppliers watching Musk’s AI buildout, the meaningful change is the scale of hardware being targeted and the fact that the process is still at the discussion stage, with no public comment from the parties involved.
