TSMC denies it is exploring 3D DRAM production for Nvidia

Any move into memory would be years away and would not quickly ease the AI-driven DRAM shortage.

TSMC has denied a report that it is exploring 3D DRAM production at Nvidia's request, saying it remains a pure-play logic foundry. Analysts note TSMC lacks DRAM process expertise and capacity, and that 3D DRAM is years away even for established memory makers, so it would not quickly ease shortages. Entering memory would also bring cyclical oversupply risk and possible antitrust scrutiny, while TSMC could instead pursue logic base dies for HBM and hybrid bonding. The wider backdrop is a memory crunch driven by AI data centers, which consume a large share of DRAM output, with suppliers reporting tight supply through 2027 and 2028 and some industry leaders expecting shortages to last until about 2030.

Why it matters

TSMC says it will stay a pure-play logic foundry, so the report that it was weighing DRAM work for Nvidia is not a sign of a new supplier arriving soon. Memory supply is expected to stay tight for years, with AI data centers absorbing a large share of output. Buyers of DRAM and HBM should expect the constraint to persist, while a foundry entering memory would also carry the risk of later oversupply.
