Amazon ends secrecy deal on data centers and promises more local spending

Amazon will make new data center projects more open to public agencies and expand community investment as scrutiny over AI infrastructure grows.

Amazon said it will stop requiring nondisclosure agreements for government agencies involved in its data center projects and will use a new Data Center Commitment program to make those builds more open. It also said it plans to spend more than $1 billion over five years in communities that host its facilities, alongside other local spending and training efforts. The company said the move is meant to answer growing pushback over AI infrastructure, including more than 100 data center moratoriums under consideration in the U.S. Amazon also said its newer sites will use backup generators that meet EPA Tier 4 emissions standards and that it will publish annual data on energy use, water use, and carbon-free power.

Why it matters

The change reduces one source of friction around new sites for local governments and residents, while giving them more information on energy, water and emissions. For communities that host Amazon facilities, the company is also tying its buildout to more than $1 billion in extra spending over five years, which adds to its existing local support.
