Blue Origin unveils two New Glenn upgrades to cut costs and lift payload

The changes target cheaper manufacturing and bigger loads to geostationary orbit and the Moon, as Blue Origin sets a long-term goal of more than 1,000 launches a year.

Blue Origin has unveiled two upgrades to its New Glenn rocket, one aimed at lowering manufacturing costs and another at raising its payload capacity to geostationary orbit and the Moon. CEO Dave Limp presented the plans at the UP.Summit event held at Florida's Shuttle Landing Facility. The company's long-term goal is to reach a launch cadence of more than 1,000 flights per year. Limp framed the push as a response to demand he described as stronger than ever.

Why it matters

The announcement signals that Blue Origin is positioning New Glenn as a higher-volume launch vehicle rather than a low-frequency one. Lower manufacturing costs and greater payload capacity to geostationary orbit and the Moon would widen the range of missions the rocket could take on. CEO Dave Limp tied the push to demand he described as stronger than ever, suggesting the company sees a market for frequent launches that it intends to serve.
