Cloudflare opens its internal config store Quicksilver to customers as KV Instant in private beta

Fast reads come with tight limits on size, write rate and cost, so the mode fits small, rarely changed data best.

Cloudflare has released Quicksilver, its internal configuration store, to customers as a new Workers KV mode called KV Instant, currently in private beta with no general availability date. Reads resolve in 1.62 ms at the 99th percentile versus 287 ms for classic KV, while writes replicate across the network with a median of 107 ms and a p99 of 256 ms. The trade-offs are steep: each namespace holds at most 10,000 pairs and one megabyte total, writes are capped at one per namespace per second, metadata is unsupported, and storage costs $100 per megabyte per month. Reads are 60% cheaper than classic KV while writes cost ten cents per operation, so the mode suits small, rarely updated data such as feature flags and routing tables rather than session state or user records.

Why it matters

For people who follow edge computing, the release shows a provider putting an internal system into a paid product with hard caps on size and write rate. Reads are far faster than in classic Workers KV, but each namespace is limited to 10,000 pairs and one megabyte, and writes are limited to one per second, so the mode is not a general replacement for the existing store. Storage at $100 per megabyte per month makes the price of that speed clear, and the lack of a general availability date means the offering is still unproven outside a limited group.
